SocialWhile
men were away at war, jobs opened up for women and children. They were able to maintain their places in the economy even after the soldiers returned. Women still didnt have the respect they had earned by working the "man's job". People were starting to learn the idea of perspective, shown by the publishing of How the Other Half Lives. Child Labor Laws were also established after many cases of cruel environments and incidents were exposed to the public. Settlement Houses were created in order to give immigrants a head start on a better life; however, they were crowded and overpopulated by multiple families in each house. The 18th Amendment was also established in an effort to "cure" the plague of drunkenness and severe unhappiness at home. Also, many found themselves engrossed in the issues of the forests and found it to be their duty to protect natures natural protection from weather and intense abuse from storms and wind as well. Many searched for a cause and found that they could protect God's creations and decided it was man's responsibility to use what it is given and not be so greedy as to over-use and obliterate the supply. EconomicAfter
the CIvil War, the Northern and Southern economy was fairly bad The South no longer had slaves to work the plantations and suffered an incredible decrease in production rates. The North, like the South, used a majority of its supplies and resources during the Civil War. Afterword, the North had many debts to pay off to the factory owners and manufacturers that the army borrowed from for necessary supplies. Progressive reforms were made in the work place and in food manufacturing places. The FDA was also formed in response to The Jungle. People were finally starting to realize the faults in their systems even despite the major advancements they made throughout the years. Jackie M |

This document explains how William "Boss" Tweed ran his fraudulent schemes to line his pockets. Boss Tweed milked the Big Apple of "an estimated 75 to 200 million dollars" through fake elections and candidacies. Tilden, however, was the one who evidently brought down Tweed Ring from New York City. Tammany Hall was replaced by other frauds and goons, but Boss Tweed's attempts failed and eventually landed in prison.
This document is significant because it explains thoroughly how Boss Tweed and his working mates, Tammany Hall, fell under the law from Tilden. It also explains how Tilden was able to run for presidency due to his successful neutralization of Boss Tweed, but it was not enough for him to win the election.

This source is a website with many pictures from the Triangle House fire that took place on March 25, 1911. In this fire, many young and single women that were working in that building were killed by either burning to death or jumping out of the building commiting suicide. This was just the very beginning of what bacame a major turning point in American history as now people realized that the working conditions in the buildings and factories were very dangerous and many poeple sought to fight for that right of working in a safer place. This was the first of many major events in which people fought for safer working conditions and eventually laws were created to make that dream come true.

I decided to write about the wilmington race riot's, which erupted after and African-american owned newspaper company wrote a fueled article about interracial sex. They also elaborated on the fact that many white men would sexually assault black women, also questioning "White womanhood". Under the pretense of the outrage of publishing this story, within 48 hour's, "On November 10th, Alfred Moore Waddell, a former Confederate officer and a white supremacist, led a group of townsmen to force the ousting of Wilmington’s city officials" They charged the democratic ruling party, and ousted the conspicious republican's and attacked african-american men, women, and children. The african americans soon had to defend themselves, and they soon fled to various area's, such as the swamps or the african-american cemetery.

The text book and my class notes
The text book contains many facts and examples of the Gilded Age and of many accounts of Progressivism. The text book explains, not only the Economic and Social aspects of the time, but also the positive and negative outcomes that sprouted from people's movements and advancements in the work place, at home and on the streets. It explains the reasons why these movements were created such as the Consumer Protection Act and the Child Labor Laws. If it weren't for these, people would still be suffering from illness due to the products they buy, handle or consume. However, production rates would be a lot faster since there would be much less processing and inspection put into the packaging and/or selling of the items. Child Labor Laws protected the youth from the harsh hands of the factory owners and managers. Since children were now protected by the law, they were able to be treated more as smaller, but not as much of a lesser human being. On the other and more cynical hand, it made it more expensive and time consuming to create suitable working conditions that would make it less likely for workers to die in or around the machinery.
The notes contain specific examples as well such as charts that categorize the information covered and discussed in class. This information is also found in the text book; however, it groups them more clearly into sections that can be separated out in order to make learning easier and more understandable. Along with the notes came the understanding of the Settlement Houses and how this effected the families living there and the land itself.
